The Best Sugar Cookies

Hey there! Thanks for stopping by. It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, life has been crazy! Today I’m here to share with you one of my favorite holiday traditions and one of the best recipes for this time of year! I love to make and decorate Sugar Cookies with my kids. Now I know what you are thinking- what a mess! Honestly it is, but I don’t mind this mess. I haven’t always loved making Sugar Cookies with my kids, but I decided several years ago that family traditions are more important than a clean house. I think I mentally prepare myself for the mess and then I just let go and enjoy it! I’m sure there are a lot of things in my life I could apply this same concept to. New Years resolutions right?!
After we have baked all of our cookies, made the frosting, and gathered our decorating supplies. We sit at the kitchen table and start decorating. I keep things pretty simple for decorating. I make four or five colors of frosting and have several options for sprinkles and get to work. We use an empty baking sheet to hold our cookies over to add the sprinkles. It’s important to add the sprinkles right away because this frosting recipe will harden as it sits. (Which is great for stacking the cookies later!)
I love spending this time with my kids. It’s definitely one of my favorite holiday traditions. I hope you will take the time to make some of your own traditions and share them with your family and friends.
Merry Christmas to you all!
- Cream Butter and sugar together. Add eggs one at a time, scraping bowl after each addition. Add vanilla. Sift dry ingredients together and add to butter mixture. Mix well. Add enough milk to make the dough come together. Do not over mix! Chill prepared dough overnight, then allow to warm to room temp before rolling out. Roll out dough and cut with cookie cutters. I like to roll mine pretty thin because they do puff up a little during baking. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes.
Frosting Recipe
1/2 Cup Butter (softened)
5-6 Cups Powdered Sugar
1 tsp Vanilla
dash of salt
food coloring
Combine the above ingredients until well mixed. Add hot milk 1 Tbs at a time until you reach the desired consistency. It's approximately 6 Tbs for thick icing. The frosting will harden as it sets.
